Does Internship Experience Count as Professional Experience?

QUESTION:

September 29, 2009 by sparktalk

Dear Experts,

Do employers consider internship experience to be part of one’s professional experience? I have nearly 2 years of professional experience, which includes 6 months as a full-time, paid intern. Would I meet most employers requirements of having 2 years experience in a particular field?

ANSWER:

Whether or not you are paid for a position is irrelevant.  The knowledge, skills, and abilities acquired through your experiences is what employers are interested in.  Be sure to highlight what you have to offer and resist the temptation to minimize your assets by pointing out that some of your experience is unpaid.

Consider a functional resume.  Even if you decide to use another format, developing a functional resume will help you to see what you have to offer.  This will improve your self-confidence prior to interviewing for this position, if nothing else!
