Past Employer Went Out of Business – Affect My Job Search?

Dear Experts,

One of my past employers went out of business. How does that affect my job search?


Your employer being out of business may pose challenges to providing references or completing applications.  Hopefully you have secured letters of referenced and/or contact information for your previous supervisor.  If not, attempt locate him/her so that you can provide that information to potential employers.  In a pinch you can use a coworker from the prior company, but this won’t carry as much weight, I’m afraid.

Unfortunately, employers are accustomed to applicants who may have been employed by a business that is now closed.  If necessary, just note that the company is closed – it shouldn’t hurt your chances of being hired!
