Can I Network Via Blogs?

September 21, 2009 by sparktalk

Dear Experts,

Folks, between the past five days I have joined Twitter, joined Jobvana.com, and started following the CAREEREALISM blog.

Is there a way for me to network using all of these platforms? I am a Chef of thirty-five years and have been unemployed for twelve months.

ANSWER:

It is great you are using technology – for a list of helpful, categorized sites look to the right and scroll down.  Start with your personal branding statement – who are you and how do you want to present yourself ( you might find my article on personal branding helpful)?  Then share that information regularly and seek to follow others who may help you.  Here are some brief tips on how you can use each:

·  Career Advice

·  Helpful Resource

  • Delicious Social networking – Bookmark your pages and share with others.
  • Evernote – Clip anything you see on the web to an online notebook, organized like a filing cabinet (I use this for every facet of my life!)
  • Jott -Organizes lists and allows for talk to text email, appointments, notes, etc.
  • Ping – Update more than one social networking site at a time!

·  Job Search Resources

  • America’s Career Info Net – Look up skill, labor market, and employer information based on Bureau of Labor and Statistics.
  • Google – Great all purpose search engine.
  • White Pages – Primarily helpful for reverse look up of phone numbers that you have to find the name that is associated with it.
  • Yellow Pages – Great to look up businesses and their websites.

·  Search for Jobs

  • Annapolis Jobs – Job listings for South Baltimore area, Annapolis, and parts of DC.
  • Career Builder – Great national job search engine to look for advertised openings.
  • Indeed – This search engine pulls job openings from newspapers as well as employer websites.
  • The Aegis – Search for work north of Baltimore and South Central PA as well as Wilmington, DE.

·  Social Networking Sites

  • Blogged – List your Blog for more exposure.
  • Delicious Social networking – Find others with similar interests.
  • Digg – Register your articles to make it easy for people who want to read it to find it.
  • Facebook – Network with friends, and their friends and relatives.
  • Stumble Upon – Note your website, article, or blog to make it easy to find.
