I Was ‘Short’ on Phone With HR. How Do I Recover?

September 17, 2009 by sparktalk

Dear Experts,

I just found out I didn’t get my dream job.

I had 3 interviews (1 with HR, 1 with department heads, 1 written test) and they even grilled all of my references. I received a phone call with the news and was very short on the phone since I was in utter shock.
What do I do now? Should I e-mail my contact in HR, should I e-mail the dept heads? I still want to be considered for any other positions at the company. Who should I follow up with and what should I say?

ANSWER:

Thank you notes are a good idea for all, regardless. If you connected with any of them more than the other reach out to that person (or persons) in their favored method of communication. If you are not sure, send handwritten, snail mail notes to each interviewer.

Be careful to keep a positive tone to your message and briefly highlight why you are perfect for the company/vice versa. It is fine to be very clear that you would love to be considered for other positions in the future – what do you have to lose?
